🥕 Seasonal Vegetable Planting

🌱 Planting Through the Seasons

The main vegetable planting seasons are Spring for Summer crops and Autumn for Winter harvests. However, there are some edibles that can be grown all year round.

🌸 Spring Planting (September-November)

Spring (September-November) is the best time for planting a large variety of root veggies, like carrots, beetroot, parsnips and seed potatoes. Salad crops such as cucumber, lettuce, peppers, tomatoes, spring onions, radish and celery will grow prolifically during this season.

☀️ Summer Planting (December-February)

The Summer (December-February) season has plants that thrive in the heat, including cucumber, tomatoes, bell and chilli peppers, bush and runner beans which can be planted along with leafy greens like Swiss chard and spinach.

🍂 Autumn Planting (March-May)

Autumn (March-May) is the cool season, suitable for growing broccoli, cauliflower, spinach and lettuce.

❄️ Winter Planting (June-August)

Winter (June-August) is the time to plant hardy vegetables like parsnips, turnips, carrots, peas, kale, onions, collards and artichokes plus greens such as broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage.

🌿 Preparing The Soil

Preparing the soil before planting is important for healthy, strong crops so add plenty of organic home-grown compost to the vegetable plot, lightly forking it into the soil, before any planting.

🐞 Companion Planting & Natural Pest Control

When planning a vegetable plot allow for a rotation of crops each year to avoid a build-up of pests and diseases. Growing ‘companion’ plants alongside the crops such as Marigolds and Nasturtiums will help ward off pests. Avoid using any chemicals and pesticides that are harmful to insects, and use natural deterrents which will boost biodiversity and help enrich the carbon content of the soil.

💧 Sunlight & Watering

All plants, whatever the season, need adequate sunlight and sufficient water for vigorous, strong growth, especially during dry periods.
