Description

Wild Peach – Kiggelaria africana

Wild Peach (Kiggelaria africana) is a beautiful indigenous South African evergreen tree, valued for its attractive foliage, spreading canopy and excellent wildlife benefits. Despite its common name, it is not a true peach tree. This hardy tree is an excellent choice for indigenous gardens, providing shade, shelter and food for a variety of birds and butterflies.

Growing Wild Peach

Wild Peach grows well in sunny to partially shaded positions and adapts to a range of soil conditions. Once established, it is reasonably drought tolerant, although young trees benefit from regular watering while establishing. With its attractive canopy and potential to grow into a substantial shade tree, it is best suited to gardens and landscapes with enough room for its mature size.

The tree produces small, inconspicuous flowers followed by distinctive fruit capsules that split open to reveal bright orange-red seeds. These seeds attract birds, while the foliage is an important food source for the larvae of the Acraea butterfly species, making Wild Peach a valuable addition to a wildlife-friendly garden.
