Description

Hypoestes aristata, commonly known as ribbon bush or purple ribbon, is a fast-growing, ornamental shrub native to southern Africa. Celebrated for its vivid floral display, it produces a profusion of tubular, lavender to deep purple flowers from late summer through autumn, providing essential nectar for bees, butterflies, and sunbirds when few other plants are blooming.

This semi-hardy perennial can grow up to 1.5 meters tall, forming a bushy, upright shape with dark green, lance-shaped leaves. Its striking flowers are two-lipped and attract attention not only for their colour but also for their timing, offering vibrant interest at the end of the dry season.

Hypoestes aristata thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained, fertile soil. It is drought-tolerant once established, making it suitable for water-wise gardens. Though it benefits from pruning after flowering to maintain a neat shape, it is otherwise low-maintenance and easy to grow. It works well in borders, mixed beds, or as an informal hedge.

As a South African indigenous plant, it is ideal for biodiversity-friendly gardens and natural landscapes. With its rich colour, long flowering season, and wildlife value, Hypoestes aristata is a charming and practical choice for sunny to lightly shaded spots.
