Description
Chrysanthemoides monilifera, commonly known as bitou bush or boneseed, is a fast-growing, woody shrub native to South Africa. This evergreen plant is recognized for its bright green, oval-shaped leaves and clusters of vibrant yellow daisy-like flowers that bloom from late winter to spring. Following the flowering period, it produces small, round, green berries that ripen to black, giving the plant its “monilifera” name, meaning “bearing necklaces” in Latin.
In South Africa, Chrysanthemoides monilifera plays an essential role in stabilizing coastal dunes and preventing erosion, thriving in sandy, well-drained soils and full sun. The shrub typically grows up to 3 meters tall, creating dense thickets that provide habitat and protection for wildlife.
Though beneficial in its native habitat, this plant is considered an invasive species in Australia and other regions where it aggressively outcompetes native vegetation. As a result, it is subject to management and control programs outside South Africa.
Resilient and drought-tolerant, Chrysanthemoides monilifera requires minimal maintenance. It is often used in landscape restoration projects due to its ability to establish quickly and adapt to challenging environments. With its striking yellow blooms and ecological benefits, it remains a valuable plant in South African coastal environments.
