Container Gardening: Easy Crops for a Winter Harvest

Grow veggies in containers this Autumn and Winter! Ideal crops include spinach, carrots, onions, peas, and more for a fresh harvest.

Pots of Crops for Autumn and Winter

If you have a small garden or outside space, vegetables can still be grown successfully in any sized containers and the cooler days of April and May are an ideal time to get planting for a delicious Winter harvest.

Choosing the Right Containers and Soil

Any size and type of container can be used with, importantly, drainage holes. Deep containers are needed to grow carrots. Always use a good quality compost with some vermiculite added to improve water retention. Slow release organic fertiliser can also be added. Garden soil is not suitable for container edibles as it can become compacted and will not drain well.

Ideal Conditions for Cool Season Vegetables

Cool season veggies suitable for container growing during Autumn and Winter thrive in lower temperatures in sun or partial shade.

Leafy Greens to Grow

Leafy Greens to choose are:

  • Spinach which is nutrient rich and grows well in partial shade.

  • Lettuce – various varieties can be grown in planters for a continuous harvest.

  • Swiss Chard is very hardy and copes well with cooler temperatures.

Brassicas for Containers

Brassicas like:

  • Kale, a great source of essential nutrients and very hardy.

  • Cabbage, easy to grow and a reliable vegetable for Winter. The Green Gonzales is a compact variety suitable for a container.

  • Broccoli and Cauliflower both crop well grown in containers.

Root Vegetables for Your Winter Harvest

Root Veggies such as:

  • Carrots, which need space and depth to grow well.

  • Beetroot thrives in large containers.

Other Edible Container Crops

Other edibles that crop well in containers are:

  • Onions, grown either from onion sets or seedlings, and relatively easy to grow in containers.

  • Broad Beans are an excellent choice for a Winter container.

  • Garlic, planted in Autumn will provide a harvest in Spring.

  • Peas and Snap peas are among the easiest container veg to grow in Winter and, once the pods are produced, regular harvesting will result in more crops. They will require a support to climb up, as will Runner Beans, also well-suited to containers.
