🐝 The Butterfly Magnet of the Garden
The Scabiosa plant, also known as the Pincushion Flower, is an invaluable addition to any garden flower border. Its unusual name comes from its historical use as a natural remedy to treat scabies many years ago. Today, however, it’s celebrated for something far more beautiful — attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies with its nectar-rich blooms.
🌱 Different Types of Scabiosa
There are several varieties of Scabiosa, including annuals, biennials, and perennials.
- Annuals are usually sown after the last frost and flower for one season only.
- Biennials generally put on a floral display for two years.
- Perennials return year after year and can be planted in early Spring or Autumn.
Scabiosa plants are also enthusiastic self-seeders, happily spreading throughout the garden over time.
☀️ Growing Conditions
Scabiosa thrive in a sunny, well-drained position. Seeds typically germinate within 2 to 3 weeks, making them a rewarding and relatively easy plant to grow. Their spreading growth habit also makes them excellent ground cover plants.
🇿🇦 Indigenous Beauty – Scabiosa Africana
The indigenous perennial variety, Scabiosa Africana, is one of the most commonly seen in South African gardens. It features large mauve flowers and attractive light green velvety foliage, growing up to approximately 1 metre tall.
Flowering from early Spring through to late Summer, this variety benefits from being cut back after flowering to encourage fresh new growth.
🌸 Spectacular Garden Varieties
💖 Scabiosa Incisa
A vigorous and spectacular perennial variety with large deep pink, mauve, or white flowers held on long stems from September to November.
🤍 Scabiosa ‘White Carpet’
This charming variety produces masses of smaller white flowers, creating a beautiful cloud-like effect above lush green foliage.
💜 Scabiosa Columbaria
Although not indigenous, this perennial variety has been developed to thrive in flower beds and garden borders. A popular hardy choice, it remains low-growing at around 30–40cm tall and produces stunning lavender-blue flowers known as Butterfly Blue or soft pink blooms called Pink Mist.
💧 Feeding and Maintenance
A liquid feed during the flowering season helps keep Scabiosa healthy, vigorous, and blooming beautifully throughout the season.
🦋 A Low-Maintenance Garden Winner
The low-maintenance Scabiosa is an absolute winner for any garden. With its long flowering season, gorgeous colour palette, and ability to attract wildlife, it’s easy to see why it’s affectionately known as the Butterfly Plant.
Whether planted in borders, cottage gardens, or pollinator-friendly spaces, Scabiosa brings effortless beauty and life to the garden.
