Description
Brillantaisia subulugurica is a striking, fast-growing herbaceous plant known for its bold foliage and eye-catching purple flowers. Native to tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, including parts of East and Central Africa, it is not indigenous to South Africa but can thrive in warm, frost-free gardens with adequate moisture and light shade.
This semi-shrubby perennial can reach heights of 100–150 cm, forming bushy clumps of soft, hairy stems and large, heart-shaped green leaves. From late spring into autumn, it produces vibrant, tubular purple flowers arranged on upright spikes, attracting bees and butterflies with their nectar-rich blooms. The dramatic contrast between its lush foliage and vivid flowers makes it a great choice for adding a tropical flair to mixed borders or forest-style gardens.
Brillantaisia prefers moist, fertile soil and does best in partial shade, where it is protected from harsh midday sun. In cooler climates or during dry spells, it benefits from regular watering. Though it can self-seed, it is generally well-behaved in the garden and easy to manage.
