Description
Pennisetum villosum ‘Cream Falls’, commonly known as feathertop grass or Chinese fountain grass, is a graceful ornamental grass prized for its soft, creamy-white, rabbit-tail flower spikes. Native to northeastern Africa and parts of the Arabian Peninsula, this compact, clump-forming grass adds texture and movement to gardens, particularly in borders, containers, and gravel gardens.
Growing to a height of 45–60 cm with a similar spread, ‘Cream Falls’ features narrow, arching green leaves that form a tidy mound. From July to October, it produces abundant silky flower spikes that shimmer in the sunlight and sway gently in the breeze, adding a dynamic element to the landscape. These blooms are also suitable for cut and dried flower arrangements.
This grass thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil. It is relatively drought-tolerant once established but benefits from occasional watering during prolonged dry periods. While ‘Cream Falls’ is a perennial, it is considered half-hardy and may require winter protection in colder regions. In areas prone to frost, mulching or growing it in containers that can be moved indoors is advisable.
Low-maintenance and generally pest- and disease-free, Pennisetum villosum ‘Cream Falls’ is an excellent choice for gardeners seeking to introduce a soft, airy texture and gentle movement to their planting schemes. Its elegant appearance and adaptability make it a versatile addition to various garden styles.
