🌹 Everything’s Coming Up Roses!
🌸 Why Roses Are a Garden Favourite
For an amazing combination of colour and fragrance, roses are unbeatable and a beautiful’must have’ plant for every garden.
🌿 Roses for Every Garden Space
There is a rose to suit any garden design and blend in perfectly, whether it’s a shrub rose in a flower border, or scrambling over an unsightly wall or covering a pergola. Roses will also happily in a container on a sunny patio.
☀️ Soil, Sunlight and Watering
A clay soil is preferable for roses to thrive, with some organic compost dug into the planting hole, in a sunny position that receives at least 6hours of sunlight a day. They also need a good watering once a week. Mulching around the base will help retain moisture.
🍌 Feeding and Maintenance
Add a rose fertiliser regularly during the flowering season, or chopped up banana skins which are full of potassium which will feed the roots. Roses need regular deadheading throughout the flowering season to encourage more blooms and established plants can be pruned in winter.
🐞 Pest Control Tips
Protect roses during the growing season against attacks by red spider mite by spraying the underside of the leaves with a strong jet of water every 2/3 days to wash the mites off. Underplanting roses with thyme or even onions will help deter any mites. Aphids can be controlled by using a spray bottle containing a mixture of water and washing up detergent.
💧 Choosing Waterwise Roses
With the need to be waterwise the choice of roses is important. Ground cover varieties are ideal for hot, dry areas and are low-maintenance.
Floribunda roses have several different blooms on one stem and make a fabulous feature planted in groups.
Shrub roses have single blooms and some varieties are drought-tolerant.
Climbing roses are a great addition to a small garden or patio area, adding colour and fragrance when trained along walls, on trellis or obelisks.
