Description

Eragrostis elliotii, or Elliot’s lovegrass, is a soft, fine-textured ornamental grass known for its delicate, cloud-like seed heads and gentle movement in the breeze. Native to North America, it adapts well to warm, dry conditions and has become a popular choice for low-maintenance, water-wise gardens around the world.

This clump-forming, warm-season grass reaches a mature height of about 60–90 cm and spreads in neat, rounded mounds of slender blue-green foliage. From late summer into autumn, it produces airy, silvery flower heads that hover above the foliage, catching the light and adding a shimmering effect to the garden.

Eragrostis elliotii thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained soil but is tolerant of sandy or poor soils. It is exceptionally drought-tolerant once established and requires little care, making it ideal for mass planting, borders, gravel gardens, or naturalistic landscapes. It is not indigenous to South Africa but performs well in similar climates.

Its fine foliage provides a soft backdrop for bolder plants, and its light, open structure attracts birds and pollinators. Whether used to add texture, movement, or seasonal interest, Eragrostis elliotii is a resilient, beautiful addition to a sun-filled garden.
