Description
Ampelodesmos mauritanicus, commonly known as Patagonia Grass or Rope Grass, is a bold, dramatic ornamental grass prized for its large size, graceful movement, and architectural presence. Native to the Mediterranean region, this evergreen or semi-evergreen grass thrives in hot, dry climates and is well-suited to South African gardens with similar conditions.
It forms dense, arching clumps of narrow, strap-like green leaves and can reach heights of 150–250 cm, making it ideal for adding height and texture to large borders, slopes, or naturalistic plantings. In spring to early summer, tall, feathery flower plumes rise well above the foliage—often up to 3 meters high—creating a billowing, fountain-like effect that sways beautifully in the wind.
Ampelodesmos mauritanicus prefers full sun and well-drained soils and is highly drought-tolerant once established. It requires very little maintenance, aside from occasional trimming of old leaves or spent flower stalks. While not indigenous to South Africa, it adapts well to similar environments and makes an excellent choice for water-wise landscapes.
With its commanding form and flowing movement, this grass makes a stunning statement in the garden and pairs well with other sun-loving, drought-resistant perennials or grasses for a wild, Mediterranean-inspired look.
