Description
Lamium – Dead Nettles
Add colour and texture to shady garden spaces with Lamium, commonly known as Dead Nettles. This attractive, low-growing groundcover is valued for its decorative foliage and delicate flowers, making it an excellent choice for adding interest beneath trees, along borders and in containers.
Despite its common name, Lamium is not a stinging nettle. The name “Dead Nettle” refers to its resemblance to stinging nettles, but its leaves do not produce the characteristic sting.
Lamium is particularly useful as a groundcover plant, forming a spreading carpet of attractive foliage while producing small flowers that add seasonal colour.
Growing Lamium
Plant Lamium in partial shade to shade in fertile, well-drained soil. Keep the soil reasonably moist, particularly while plants are becoming established. It works well in areas where other flowering plants may struggle due to lower light levels.
Lamium is ideal for:
- Shady garden beds
- Underplanting beneath trees
- Groundcover
- Borders and edging
- Containers and pots
- Woodland-style gardens
