Description

Carex comans ‘Milk Chocolate’ is a striking ornamental sedge admired for its rich, warm-toned foliage and soft, arching form. Native to New Zealand, this compact, clump-forming grass-like plant brings colour and texture to a wide variety of garden settings, especially in modern or naturalistic designs.

The fine, hair-like leaves range in colour from coppery-bronze to chocolate brown, adding a distinctive contrast to green-leaved plants. It typically grows to a height of 30–40 cm, forming neat, flowing mounds that gently spill over edges or fill containers with graceful movement. Although its flowers are inconspicuous, the foliage is the main attraction, providing year-round interest in mild climates.

Carex comans ‘Milk Chocolate’ prefers full sun to partial shade and thrives in well-drained soil. It is drought-tolerant once established and ideal for rock gardens, borders, pots, and mass planting. While not indigenous to South Africa, it adapts well to similar growing conditions and can be used in both formal and informal plantings.

Low-maintenance and evergreen in milder regions, this sedge pairs beautifully with succulents, gravel gardens, or mixed borders. With its unusual colour and fine texture, it offers a soft, contemporary look that enhances both urban and natural landscapes.
