Description

Carex ‘Sea Green Alba’ is a graceful, ornamental sedge prized for its fine-textured, arching foliage and delicate white-tinged flowers. A cultivar of the Carex genus, this sedge is not indigenous to South Africa but grows well in temperate climates with moist, well-drained soil. It adds soft, flowing texture to shaded or semi-shaded gardens, where its elegant form gently brightens up dim corners and underplantings.

Reaching a height of about 30–45 cm, Carex ‘Sea Green Alba’ forms low, mounding clumps of slender, green-blue leaves with a subtle silvery sheen. In spring to early summer, small, creamy-white flower spikes emerge just above the foliage. Though not showy, these blooms add a delicate contrast and attract beneficial insects. Its evergreen or semi-evergreen habit ensures year-round interest in the landscape.

This sedge prefers partial shade but can tolerate full sun in cooler regions. It thrives in consistently moist soil, making it a good choice for borders, woodland gardens, stream edges, or as a groundcover in damp areas. It also works well in containers or planted en masse for a natural look.

Low-maintenance and non-invasive, Carex ‘Sea Green Alba’ brings elegance and softness to any water-wise, shady garden space.
