Description
Pennisetum macrourum, commonly known as African feather grass, is a tall, elegant ornamental grass native to southern Africa. Known for its upright growth and distinctive, feathery flower spikes, this grass adds texture, height, and movement to garden landscapes, especially in naturalistic or water-wise designs.
It forms dense, clumping mounds of narrow green foliage that can reach 100–150 cm in height. In late summer to autumn, long, narrow flower spikes emerge on even taller stems, often rising to 200 cm or more. These soft, cream to buff-coloured plumes sway gracefully in the wind and provide a striking vertical accent in beds, borders, and grassland plantings. The plumes also persist into winter, adding seasonal interest and supporting wildlife.
Pennisetum macrourum thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. It is drought-tolerant once established and requires minimal maintenance, needing only an annual trim to remove old growth. Though valued for its ornamental qualities, it can self-seed in some climates, so placement and management should be considered.
As an indigenous grass, it is well-suited to South African conditions and can play a valuable role in habitat restoration or wildlife-friendly gardening. Its strong form and graceful texture make it a popular choice in both formal and wild garden settings.
