Keep up with seasonal tasks in the garden during March in preparation for the Autumn and Winter seasons, so your outside space looks good through to Spring.Â
Weeds will spread quickly if left unchecked, so be sure to remove any weeds, especially the roots, regularly from flower borders, containers, and vegetable plots. A good mulch around plants and across any bare soil will help smother persistent weeds.
Propagate plants by taking cuttings of perennials and collecting seeds from seed heads on plants, remembering to leave some for hungry birds. Store the seeds in a dry place ready to sow in Spring. Give woody plants like Rosemary and Lavender a trim after the flowers have faded.
Spring-flowering bulbs should be planted now so they can establish a strong root system ready for a fabulous display in Spring. Anemones, Rananculi, Bubamias, Ixias, Sparaxia, and Watsonia are all colourful choices to try. Plant some in containers to brighten the patio, or in a window box for a welcome splash of colour. Bulbs planted in groups will make a stunning display.Â
Top tip! Always mark where bulbs are planted in the ground to avoid accidentally digging them up!
Autumn is a good time to move any shrubs that need a new position in the garden. Prepare the new planting hole by adding some good compost and a handful of Bonemeal. Water the shrub well once in position until established.
Once flowers are finished, prune evergreen flowering shrubs and overgrown climbers, but leave any Winter-flowering varieties.
Lift and divide Summer-flowering perennials like Arums, Hemerecocallis, Iris, Cannas, Dietes, and Agapanthus. Cut the foliage back once the plant is repositioned.
Give container plants a last feed to boost the compost during the Winter, and add fertiliser to citrus trees to ensure a good crop of fruit.
In the veggie garden, plant Onions, Beetroot, Carrots, Kale, Brussel sprouts, Garlic, Swiss chard, Broccoli, Peas, and Cauliflower in prepared beds.
Start a compost heap, an invaluable addition to the garden. Collect fallen leaves to spread over soil as the leaves will provide essential nutrients as they mulch down.
