Fabulous Phlox
Originating in North America, Phlox is a stunning addition to any garden. Phlox paniculata, also known as Perennial Phlox, produces magnificent clusters of flowers in a beautiful range of colours, including salmon, blue, white, lavender, pink and purple. These blooms grow on upright, branched stems surrounded by dark green foliage, with plants reaching heights of approximately 60–120 cm. Phlox is a versatile choice that complements almost any garden style.
One of the most delightful features of Phlox is its intoxicatingly sweet fragrance. The nectar-rich, long-tubed flowers attract bees, butterflies and nectar-feeding birds, bringing life, movement and biodiversity to your garden.
Growing and Caring for Phlox
Perennial Phlox becomes dormant during late autumn and winter, with fresh growth emerging in spring. This makes it an ideal time to propagate your plants using softwood cuttings. Alternatively, you can divide established clumps during winter dormancy. Dividing Phlox not only gives you more plants to enjoy but also helps rejuvenate older clumps.
To divide your Phlox, carefully lift the plant from the soil and separate the root ball into smaller clumps, ensuring each section has healthy roots and shoots. Replant the divisions and water them well.
Phlox thrives in full sun or light shade and prefers well-drained soil that retains some moisture. A generous layer of mulch around the roots helps keep the soil cool and moist. Regular watering, preferably early in the morning or in the evening, will help your plants flourish, particularly during warmer weather.
Phlox for Every Garden
If you prefer something more compact, Phlox drummondii is a delightful annual variety. It is free-flowering and wonderfully fragrant, growing to around 25 cm tall. Its bright blooms come in cheerful shades of coral, white, purple and red, making it perfect for the front of flower borders, containers and spreading displays of seasonal colour.
Another lovely option is Wild Phlox, commonly sold under the name Sutera grandiflora. This fast-growing perennial has aromatic, grey-green foliage and generous clusters of pale purple flowers. Growing to approximately 30 cm tall, it is a wonderful choice for flower borders and for covering bare patches of soil. Its flowers appear from late spring through summer, attracting butterflies and adding a soft, natural feel to the garden.
Whether you choose the tall, colourful perennial varieties, the compact annual Phlox drummondii or the spreading Wild Phlox, these beautiful plants offer fragrance, colour and valuable food for pollinators.
